Frequently Asked Questions1 What is a SAFO? A SAFO (Silicone Ankle Foot Orthosis) is a flexible, comfortable silicone orthotic ankle support for the treatment of plantar flexed foot commonly known as drop foot. This can affect 1/1000 people, and typically is a symptom associated with Charcot Marie tooth syndrome, (CMT), Multiple Sclerosis (MS) Muscular Dystrophy Cerebral Palsy (CP) and other neurological conditions and orthopaedic injuries. 2 How does it function? The function of a SAFO is unique. It lifts the foot from the top rather than pushing the foot up from underneath like the more traditional plastic and carbon fibre ankle foot orthoses (AFO's ). This is a more natural action and does not cause pressure or discomfort underneath the foot, which is a sensitive area. 3 What is it made of?A SAFO is made out of 100% silicone with Velcro straps which are either concealed or external, depending which model you choose. The different densities of silicone used in its construction create a flexible dynamic total contact orthotic. Because it wraps around and totally matches the contours of your foot, the risk of pressure areas and sores is greatly reduced. 4 Is it suitable for everyone who has a drop foot?Like most things in life it is not a panacea. The SAFO can have enormous benefits for those patients who suffer from drop foot caused by medical condition; Charcot Marie Tooth, Peripheral Neuropathies, Guillian Barre Syndrome, Trauma injuries, Polio, Multiple Sclerosis and some Spinal Injuries. However in severe cases, the eleasticity in the silicone is not strong enough to give the necessary support. 5 Is it difficult to put on and take off?No - very easy! Each SAFO has Velcro straps that fasten on the inside of the leg. The foot section slides on and the Velcro tabs can then be fastened around the lower part of the leg. Most patients wear the Orthosis directly against the skin, using a small amount of talcum powder to make it easier to slip on. 6 Can I order one direct from Dorset Orthopaedic or another Company?Yes. The SAFO is custom made from a plaster cast mould taken of the patient's foot and leg, therefore it does need a qualified person to assess the patient and take the plaster mould. This person could be your local orthotist, who will forward the cast to Dorset Orthopaedic – we’re the company which makes the SAFO in Ringwood. Alternatively, we run our own private orthotic clinics in various locations. Depending on your local NHS trust the SAFO may be available on prescription, if not, you can buy it privately. 7 How do I find out more about it?Please get in touch with Dorset Orthopaedic directly by email, by phone or by completing our contact form. One of our clinicians would be pleased to give advice. Alternatively ask your GP to put you in touch with your local orthotist. 8 Do I have to wear a shoe to keep it in place? No! The SAFO is like a sock and can be worn without a shoe. In the majority of cases normal size footwear can be worn, even sandals. 9 Can I swim in it?Yes! You can swim or shower in a SAFO, chlorine and salt water will not affect it, but good hygiene and care is important. 10 Can I drive a car wearing a SAFO?Yes, but you would have to check with your doctor and insurance company that it is OK to drive wearing a SAFO. Patients who do wear SAFO's when driving comment they have more sensation and control of the pedals. It is also more comfortable to drive in SAFO's that are flexible compared to rigid AFO's. |
